DIY Christmas Card Ideas
The holiday season is upon us once again. Celebrating is always hectic, which is why we wanted to offer some ideas for your annual Christmas card. Whether you’re going for a classic look or something new, we have ideas for you!
Seasonal Washi Tapes
You can get inexpensive and seasonal washi tapes just about everywhere these days! These cute and colourful tapes are a great way to decorate with great results and low commitment. Select a few you like and apply them to cards in geometric patterns, or make a sheet covered in this tape you can cut shapes out of and glue on top! This is a great craft to do with little ones!
Silhouettes
This classic and simple style has been in fashion since the 1800s! To do this craft, have your family members stand in profile and take a photo of them. Either print out or trace their outline onto a new piece of paper and then you can transfer this silhouette to your card. Arrange the silhouettes into a nice pattern and glue them down or trace them in place. The silhouettes look best in a solid contrasting colour. Black is most traditional, but you can mix it up with other colours like red, green, or silver.
Calligraphy
Try your hand at some simple lettering for a really personal touch to your holiday greeting cards. Otherwise, there are plenty of beautiful calligraphy typefaces you can download online and print for maximum ease. You can also combine these methods! Print out your message in the font you like. Place on a lightboard with your card overtop or tape it to a window and trace the lines for a hand-lettered look without needing to hand-letter at all.
Wrapping Paper collage
Get creative with your wrapping paper scraps! Collage these pieces onto cards for a pop of colour and maybe you can make the card look like a little gift itself! Add a bit of paper, ribbon, or string to complete the effect. This simple and fun card idea is a great way to use up scraps of any kind without tossing them. If you want to be especially coordinated this year, you can match the card to the gift with its wrapping!
Embroidery
You don’t need to be a master at sewing to make impressive, embroidered cards! Get some embroidery floss of your colour choice or even some ribbon and some embroidery needles if you don’t have any. Mark small dots faintly on your card in the design you would like (thicker paper or cardstock works best for this) and use a sharp object to punch out these holes to make sewing through them easier. Make sure to spread out the holes a little so the design doesn’t tear out. While it takes a little preparation, this card idea is a fun way to practice some basic sewing skills.
Pop-Up Cards
Pop-Up cards seem harder than they are. You can make a fun winter scene with pop-up animals like reindeer, bears, rabbits, or otherwise. You’ll need a couple different papers and some patience to make it all fit together, but it’s a great project for a slow afternoon. Once you’ve done a few, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to do these before!
